Portable Appliance Testing
The Health and Safety executive makes random checks of businesses to ensure that the portable appliances are safe.
Records of regular appliance testing by Spartan Contracts will usually be accepted by the Health and Safety Executive. Whether or not your company is visited, you must still comply with the regulations, otherwise you are breaking the law.
Regular testing is an essential part of preventative maintenance. How frequently it needs to be carried out depends on:-
- The appliances concerned
- How intensively they are used
- The environment in which they used
An annual test should be adequate for most office equipment.
Appliances which are used in a more hostile environment, or which are constantly being moved around will need more frequent testing to ensure safety. We can advise you on a recommended testing programme for individual appliances.
Spartan Contracts will carry out any inventory of the portable appliances at each of your sites and update the inventory regularly.
Bar coding
We affix a unique bar code to each appliance on our first test visit. This enables us to track test results over the long term, making sure that tests are carried out at the appropriate intervals. We can produce bar codes to your own specifications for a corporate monitoring system.
Testing
Spartan Contracts' inspection personnel are fully trained and experienced in the various tests required to ensure safe operation of appliances.
They also carry the latest microprocessor-controlled test equipment which provides supremely accurate readings and is also capable of downloading the results to your computer system.
If an appliance fails any of the tests, we provide a report and an estimate for rectifying the fault.
Please note: Microwave Ovens are covered by a specific standard - BS EN 60335-2-90 (2002) - Specification for safety of household and similar electrical appliances. Particular requirements for commercial microwave ovens.
This standard specifies tests focusing mainly on leakage, to ensure safe operation. Spartan Contracts is equipped and experienced to carry out these vital safety tests.
Monitoring requirements
Records of maintenance, including test results, throughout the working life of an appliance, are provided in a prepared format which can be accessed on any computer system. Training in the basic skills needed to access the computer data is given on-site: both the training and subsequent telephone helpline support are included in our prices.
A sensible pricing policy
We can either provide an itemised quote based on the site inventories or, for larger contracts, a standard unit price. In either case, our prices are inclusive of all our administration and travelling costs, as well as bar-coding the appliances for test record purposes. Contact us for a quote.
Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) equipment
E-call wireless disabled toilet alarm system
A completely wire free system which draws power from an integral 2-4 year long-life battery designed for use in toilets or room where an emergency alarm is required for persons who may require assistance from a remote location.
Induction loop systems
Induction loop legislation affects almost all commercial properties in the UK. Current building regulations state that newly erected or substantially reconstructed non-domestic buildings must provide aids for the hearing impaired.
Loop Induction Systems are used as an aid for the hearing impaired to obtain maximum involvement in communications. All NHS hearing aids have a "T" position which allows an electromagnetic field to be received through the hearing aid and converted to sound. In individually and specifically designed locations the Loop Induction System can facilitate conferences, meeting rooms, banks (where a glass screen is essential), theatres, churches, shops, even domestic television and audio.
Each location is specifically designed and installed to individual requirements. All installations require an amplifier, microphone and a single loop of cable, or in some circumstances an Infra Red System can be installed depending on the nature of the location.
- Installations are individually designed for all purposes
- Infra red systems available where cable systems cannot be used
- No limits on room size or application
- Can be free standing or wall mounted
- Linkable with TV/Audio, Fire Alarms, Door Bells, Conference systems
- Fully compliant with EN 60118-4 and BS 7594:1993
All our engineers have been fully trained in installation techniques to gain the best results from our systems, although a full survey is essential, as external influences can affect overall performance of the installation.
