Wiring Installations

We ensure that your electrical installations conform to the latest safety guidelines from the The British Standards Institution (BSI) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) standard BS 7671:2008, which requires "every new installation and alteration, or extension to an existing installation, be inspected and tested before being put into service. It is also recommended that all fixed wiring installations be tested for safety periodically".

New installations

The Regulations specify a wide range of tests which must be carried out before a new installation is commissioned. If any of these tests reveals a non-compliance, that test and any preceding tests, where the result may have been affected by the fault, have to be repeated.

On completion, as well as issuing a report, our engineer must recommend periodic inspection and test interval: this interval is usually no more than five years, but can be shorter with some installations. We will also submit a quotation for the work required to bring the installation in line with the "Health & Safety at Work" Regulations.

Alterations and additions

Naturally, any alteration or addition to an installation is subject to the same inspection and test criteria as a new installation. In addition, the Spartan Contracts engineer will ensure that the alteration or addition does not impair the safety of any existing installations.

Home Information Pack (HIPs)

HIPs logo Since 14th December 2007 properties marketed in England and Wales need a Home Information Pack (HIP).

Home Condition Report

A HIP can include a Home Condition Report that contains information about the physical condition of a property, which sellers, buyers and lenders will be able to rely on legally as an accurate report.

Spartan Contracts engineers can perform fixed wire inspections of domestic properties to Part P of the Building Regulations and subsequent rectification of faults prior to sale or lease.

Testing

Although an installation may have passed its initial inspection and tests, faults may have developed over a period of time or it may not comply with the current Regulations since these are regularly updated to take into account technological developments and increasing standards.

Why do electrical installations need periodic testing?

Periodic inspection and testing is carried out with five objectives in view:

To ensure that people and livestock are saved from the effects of electric shocks and burns
To prevent potential fire and heat damage caused by a defect in the installation
To check that the installation has not become unsafe through deterioration or damage
To make sure that there are no installation defects or evidence of non-compliance with the current Regulations which might be dangerous
To meet insurance company requirements.

Proof of inspection

After the installation has been tested and inspected the Spartan Contracts engineer will issue you with an official certificate. This certificate shows particulars of the installation, the test results and other important information which is your proof that your installation complies with BSI and IET Regulations.
